RSHU and SibFU academic staff members discussed further development of joint MOOCs

Teams of RSHU and SibFU academic staff arranged Skype-conference to discuss further development of the MOOC on Arctic called “Introduction to the Arctic Environment and permafrost zones, with an overview of biophysical, social and economic systems, available knowledge and science-policy interfaces” and the MOOC on Sustainable Development.

1st SUNRAISE conference

The first International SUNRAISE conference “Trabsboundary Regions under Global Change: Current Challenges and Development Trajectories” was held in Gorno-Altaisk State University (Gorno-Altaisk, Altai Republic, Russia) on November 26-28. The conference united scientists, representatives of NGOs and protected areas from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Bhutan, India, Estonia, Mongolia, Switzerland and different regions of Russia: the Altai and the Tyva Republics, Tomsk Oblast, Altai Krai, Krasnoyarsk Krai and Zabaikalsky Krai.

A new university textbook developed at GASU under SUNRAISE

SUNRAISE team at Gorno-Altaisk State University (GASU) has developed and published a textbook titled "Environmental Design & Expertise" that is intended for BSc students majoring in Ecology and Environmental Management. The textbook includes materials for independent preparation for seminars and practical classes, and performing course assignments. It covers such topics as the formation of environmental awareness and development of the institution of environmental expertise in the Russian Federation and EU countries, a legal framework of environmental design and expertise, health and hygiene standards for air quality, standardization of the quality of natural water bodies, state environmental expertise, and others. It also gives methodology for calculating the amount of various air pollutants and assessing the impact of economic activities on the environment, and detailed instructions for preparation to the professional simulation (role-playing) game "Conducting the environmental expertise for a large-scale hydropower plant to be constructed in the Altai Republic.".

In total, GASU teachers have developed three courses with e-learning modules within the framework of the SUNRAISE project: "Environmental Design & Expertise", "Waste Management" and "Sustainable Development of Mountain Territories." All the courses are being taught during the 2019-2020 academic year. Thanks to the equipment for a portable ecological laboratory purchased with the support of the Project, the students have an opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge in practice during their outdoor-seminars and field practices.

 The conference «Transboundary Regions under the Global Change - challenges and development trajectories» will be held in Gorno-Altaisk on November 26-28, 2019. It is organized by Gorno-Altaisk State University, Katunsky Biosphere Reserve (RU) and the partners of SUNRAISE project - Sustainable Natural Resource Use in Arctic and High Mountainous Areas.
